John Cumberbatch

I work as lecturer at the department of Informatics . I have been employed at the University of Umeå since 1975. Before coming to Sweden I worked in western Canada for 10 years as a computer programmer. I did my Ph.D. in computing science at the University of Alberta. I received my undergraduate education in England. I speak Swedish fluently.

  • I teach courses at the undergraduate level in Java, C++, operating systems, databases, computer networks, software engineering and design of grafical user interfaces.

  • For the past few years I have been the person responsible for international exchange programs at the department.

  • Until the autumn of 1999 I worked half time as systems analyst at the university computing center Umdac. There I developed BELEVAD, an order processing system used by the university for purchasing computer equipment and SALUTH, a reservation system used for booking lecture rooms throughout the university. Both systems are written in Ingres Open Road. I also developed a system for the European Computer Driving Licence used throughout the country ECDL.

  • In my spare time I am active in the outdoors, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, skiing and skating. When on holiday I prefer to travel. I am an active member of the Umeå section of the Swedish Touring Club STF.
