I have been at the Department of Informatics, Umeå University, for many years. But, since August of 2005 I am at the School of Informatics, Indiana University, Bloomington. At Indiana I work in the Human Computer Interaction Design group. I have a homepage there and a blog, and my email is estolter@indiana.edu From May 2008 I will again work part time at Umeå University. You can of course always reach me via email!
My research interests are focused on several topics. I am working on interaction design and information systems design. This work has led to two quite new books: Löwgren, J. & Stolterman, E. (2004). Fitzgerald, B., Russo, N. & Stolterman, E. (2002). Information Systems Development: Methods-in-Action. McGraw-Hill. London. I also have a strong interest in design philosophy and design theory, especially in relation to the practice of design work, design skill and design ability of the designer. As a consequence my work has also been focused on the education and training of designers. I am also working on the philosophy and methodology of design disciplines. This is done in close collaboration with Harold Nelson, ADi, Seattle. And it resulted in May, 2003 in a book: Nelson, H. & Stolterman, E. (2003) The Design Way - Intentional Change in an Unpredictable World. Educational Technology Publications. New Jersey. I also work with issues related to information technology and society, i.e. how information technology changes the preconditions and evolution of our society. To do this I also study the field of philosophy of technology. These questions are the basis for the current projects we are conducting in the Life Research Group.
I am also very much involved in the creation and development of ADI. Please visit out web site. The Advanced Design Institute is a non-profit organization for members with an interest in the advancement of design as a specific human activity, demanding a new foundation of design epistemology, design theory and design methodology. Design is the process of bringing something "non-existing" into being, such as things, systems, symbols and services. Design is not about superficial beauty, but about the invention and creation of an artifacts (concrete or abstract) function, form and structure (or ethics, aesthetics and reason). Advanced Design Institute want to bring designers from all fields of design together in an exploration of the "nature" and generic characteristics of the design process. If ADI sounds interesting
to you, email me, you can find my email at the top of the page.
