Today virtual worlds are gaining in popularity on the Internet. A virtual world is a digitally designed arena that supports the emergence of societies. Important factors to how these societies will function are (often implicitly) designed into the technology on which the worlds are based. Juridical, social and economical rules of the societies are coded into the system.
We foresee a continued increase of the importance of virtual worlds as arenas for social interaction and are therefore interested in studying social consequences of design decisions on the technological level. We have chosen an active explorative method where we participate in the ongoing development and design of these new societies to first of all increase our understanding of the phenomena, and then also try to give some advice on how to design virtual worlds that fit into, and offer something positive to, our existing societal structures.
