Course Descriptions

  • Informatics A.1, Digital Business 15 ECTS credits (syllabus)

In our modern society organizations are increasingly dependent upon information technology (IT) for doing business. Therefore an understanding is needed of the relationship between an organization and its use of information technology (IT). Furthermore strategies must be developed for IT-usage in businesses and organizations. This module covers the developing pattern of IT-usage which influences the possibilities for organizational actions and development. Examples of such IT-usage are business systems, agents, customer relationship management (CRM), digital market places, micro payments and mobile services. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of information technology for business purposes and its significance for business logic. The module also gives insight into the consequences of IT-usage both for individuals and organizations.

  • Informatics A.5, Information Technology and its Applications, 7,5 ECTS credits (syllabus)

An understanding of the social and technical aspects of the use of information technology (IT). The architecture of computer hardware and systems software are introduced. Different application areas of IT for both organisations and individuals are presented. Principles of data communication and computer networks are introduced. Large scale nets such as the Internet as well as company based nets are discussed together with the social consequences of their use. Risks and related ethical issues of IT are also covered.

  • Informatics A.6, Design and Usability of Interactive Systems, 7,5 ECTS credits (syllabus)

Knowledge of methods and techniques used when designing interactive systems, as well as practical experience on how this knowledge can be applied in real situations. Focus is placed on human-computer interaction and aspects of the usability of information technology. Further, the module covers the relation between design and usability, where expert- and user tests are conducted in order to discover usability problems. These problems are then translated into design implications for redesign of the system. Specific issues raised during the module are the nature of the relation between interaction design and usability as well as the application of the usability concept to interactive experiences.

  • Informatics C.01, Bachelor's Paper, 15 ECTS credits (syllabus)

The students are given an opportunity to improve and apply, independently and critically, their knowledge of informatics. They are also given the chance to learn and practice investigation. The work also includes the choice of a subject and formulation of problem, aim, and limitation. This module is a prerequisite for students who intend to take a Bachelor's degree with a major in Informatics.

  • D.8, Capturing the Use Context of Computer Applications, 7.5 ECTS credits (syllabus)

Information technologies (IT) often fail because they do not fit into the real-life context in which they are used by individuals and organizations. It is not surprising, therefore, that the notion of context is currently of central concern for many researchers and developers of IT. A number of ideas and approaches have been proposed to understand the nature of context of IT. The module covers the current approaches to the context of IT, including, among others, cognitive science, ethnomethodology, situated actions, participatory design, and activity theory. Students acquire an understanding of the main perspectives of the problem of context. Further a number of practical techniques are introduced including task analysis, design rationale, contextual design, and the Activity Checklist. The module focuses on the notion of context and its implications for evaluation, design, and customization of IT.

  • D.14, Pressence in Virtual Environments, 7.5 ECTS credits (syllabus)

One of the defining features of recent information technology - and especially virtual reality - is the sense of presence, the feeling of being in another world, created by computer mediation. The module examines the concept of presence from two main perspectives: as a biological phenomenon, something that arose and developed through evolution to ensure the survival of the organism, and as a media-related effect, with different media (films, novels, computer games) eliciting different levels of presence. The module combines these two perspectives to give an account of how presence arises, its psychological and technical components, what effects it has, and how to design computer based environments that support it.
