Research at the Department of InformaticsResearch in the Department of Informatics at Umeå University can be characterized as follows: a strong ambition to study information technology and its development in a social science tradition. In this tradition, philosophical and scientific questions coexist with the goal of contemporary and social relevance. As a scientific discipline, Informatics partially covers international disciplines such as information management, management information systems (MIS), human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and computer science. In Sweden, Informatics used to be known as "Administrative Data Processing". Informatics is about supporting work and leisure by improving information systems design and the use of interactive IT-artifacts. This improvement should benefit individuals, organizations and society as a whole. Informatics includes the description and analysis of organizational and individual work routines; the specification of technology requirements; and the design and implementation of system solutions and human-computer interaction. Typical for Informatics is a strong desire to unite technological, social and psychological aspects of information systems. The goal is to take the best possible advantage of technology's opportunities, while avoiding its limitations. |
